Google is leaving no stone unturned in an attempt to take on TikTok and bought an AI-powered Imaging company "Alter" for $100 million which mainly focuses on Avatars according to an anonymous source.
Alter is Google’s eighth acquisition this year alone, in February the company took over Raxium, the micro LED producer.
Google has confirmed this deal but has not revealed any other details. Google acquired Alter two months ago to counter TikTok. In September, Jonathan Slimak, former COO of Alter declared that he was starting a new position at Google without stating about the acquisition on Linkedin.
Alter started with Facemoji in 2020 as plug and play avatar assistant for gaming and social networks. Among other firms, Twitter too gave seed money of $3 million to the startup.
Snapchat has Bitmoji, you can create your avatar from a library that can suit the mood and stickers to send your expression, avatars, and filters which are face mapped. FB and Instagram have their versions of filters. Google is competing with TikTok, Youtube Shorts may be getting new avatars though the company has not let anything out.
