Google Drive Desktop users experience file loss glitch; investigation underway

Google is looking into a problem where some people using Google Drive for Desktop lost their files. The problem seems to be with a specific version of the Google Drive desktop app. Google advises users not to mess with certain folders and is trying to figure out what went wrong. Some users noticed their files were gone and told Google about it. Google confirmed the problem and said it affects a small group of people using Google Drive for Desktop version 84.0.0.0 through 84.0.4.0. One user lost files dating back to May and tried to get them back with Google's help, but it didn't work. In a community support thread, many users complained about similar issues. One user said their IT person couldn't find the files, and another said Google wanted data about their Drive to figure out the problem. A Google Drive team member named Saitej gave a warning not to do certain things with the app. They said not to disconnect the account or mess with the app data folder, which is in a specific location on Windows and macOS. Saitej also suggested making a backup copy of the app folder just in case. People depend on online services like Google Drive to keep their files safe. It's frustrating for users to find out that their files might not be as safe as they thought. A recent mistake in the Google Drive desktop app caused some users to lose important files going back several months. A support thread on Google Drive Help has messages from users who found their remote backups empty. The first complaint came from a Windows user who lost files from May, both on their computer and in Google's storage. Even with help from Google's support team, the files couldn't be restored. Many other users reported similar problems, with over 300 clicking on the "I have the same question" button.
