How to Eliminate a Browser Hijacker?

A browser hijacker is a form of malicious software that seizes control of your web browser, manipulating your browsing experience by diverting you to specific websites and modifying your browser settings. Typically, it enforces the use of a new search engine, making it exceptionally challenging to navigate seamlessly from one webpage to another. Certain browser hijackers are primarily designed to generate advertising revenue. They redirect users to pages filled with advertisements, artificially inflating ad revenue for the entities behind these websites. Others can be far more sinister, embedding spyware that collects data on your browsing history and online behavior, thus laying the groundwork for potential cyberattacks such as session hijacking and DNS hijacking. Getting rid of a browser hijacker can prove to be a challenging task since it's not always clear how it infiltrated your device in the first place. There are two approaches to consider: manual and automated methods.

Manual Approach:

If you prefer to locate and uninstall the hijacker manually, follow these steps: Clear all browsing history, cookies, and cache from all the web browsers on your device. Inspect your installed applications for any software you recently downloaded around the time the hijacker appeared. If you installed free software shortly before the issue arose, the hijacker likely came bundled with it. Uninstall any software you suspect might be the culprit behind the hijacker and then delete all associated system files linked to that software. This step is crucial because merely uninstalling the software may leave residual folders on your device containing program files from the original download. After removing all files related to recent software downloads, reset your browsers to their default settings or your preferred preferences. This is essential because uninstalling the hijacker won't automatically reverse all the changes it made to your settings, requiring manual adjustments. Test your browsers by opening new tabs, clicking on the homepage button, and using the search bar. While this manual approach may work, it can be a time-consuming process, and there's a possibility you may not locate and eliminate all the malicious files. If you encounter difficulties, consider an automated solution. Also Read: 5 Ways on How To Use Android Phone As Wi-Fi Repeater?

Automated Approach:

High-quality antimalware software is adept at identifying and neutralizing browser hijackers, along with other malware on your system. Numerous reliable antimalware applications are available, and whichever one you choose will typically offer to scan your device for threats and unwanted programs. Allow the software to perform this scan, and then instruct it to quarantine and delete any identified threats. It's important to note that not all antimalware tools can effectively detect browser hijackers, as some may go unnoticed during malware scans. To mitigate this risk, opt for antimalware software that offers a free trial so that you can verify its capability before making a purchase. With this in mind, you may need to try multiple antimalware programs until you find one that effectively addresses the issue.
