Gorilla Glass Victus 2 may save your phone from disastrous concrete fall

You can thank (or blame) your big, fat phone for Corning making Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the new cover glass the company revealed today. When Corning set out 15 years ago to create unbreakable glass and started testing on mobile devices, the reference point was 160g, which was heavier than the original iPhone, which weighed 135g. Compare this to the iPhone 14 Pro, which weighs 206g, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which weighs 240 grammes, and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which measures 228 grammes. That's still less than some of the weight of the new phones, but it's not the only change in the testing methodology. Corning VP David R. Velasquez told me this week that mobile phones are now much more technologically advanced, as well as heavier and denser. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 It differs from the original Victus, which was launched two years ago, but it performs better in terms of breakage. After years of slipping phones from 1M and 2M heights on simulated asphalt surfaces, Corning has changed its testing methodology. Corning is evaluating Gorilla Glass Victus 2 at 1M and "asphalt" hardness, with a variation in surface jaggedness. Corning sent me a sheet with two sandpaper squares of varying coarseness to simulate both. The "concrete" one has a noticeably rougher surface. Velasquez reminded me of a time when safeguarding glass screens was a lot simpler. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 The iPhone 4 was the first iPhone that was made entirely of glass, according to Steve Jobs. Corning is in talks with users about bendable glass and hopes to have a product available over the next couple of years. "We're not there yet, but we're going to keep fighting," Corning spokesperson John Velasquez says. Valesquez anticipates that some of Corning's partners will make announcements in the future.
