Jake Gyllenhaal plays a U.S. Army Sergeant in Guy Ritchie's The Covenant

Jake Gyllenhaal must settle a hefty loan in The Covenant. Gyllenhaal, 42, plays a U.S. Army Sergeant John Kinley with Dar Salim as Ahmed, an interpreter from Afghanistan, in the upcoming military thriller by Guy Ritchie. According to a published synopsis, "After an ambush, Ahmed goes to Herculean lengths to save Kinley's life." It continues, "When Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given safe passage to America as promised, he must repay his debt by returning to the war zone to retrieve them before the Taliban hunts them down first." Furthermore, the trailer plays back to the terrifying scene in which Kinley is attacked and saved by Ahmed before turning to the present when the latter is in jeopardy. "For three weeks, this family believed you were dead," says Emily Beecham's character to Kinley. I should be in that hole," later adding, "I am gonna have to get him out myself."

The Covenant changed its name from The Interpreter and Ritchie, 54, explained why at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in December last year. According to the director, who told Variety, "Names, as it transpires, is about the most challenging aspect of filmmaking. The last few films I've done, the trickiest decision to make has been the name of the movie. As of today, it's called The Covenant." He added that they finished the film "literally in the last few days." Lastly, The Covenant, which also stars Bobby Schofield, Antony Starr, Alexander Ludwig, and Jonny Lee Miller, will hit theatres on April 21.
