The announcement of Adult Happy Meals seemed to be a clever marketing ploy for McDonald's and a funny tale that would make everyone laugh. Additionally, Cactus Plant Flea Market-style four-eyed toys of the classic McDonald's characters, packaged for adults, look destined for viral success. However, the hyper-popular offer, it turns out, is backfiring spectacularly on the actual McDonald's personnel, who allege it is causing chaos and unhappiness as they battle to complete an avalanche of orders. One employee posted on TikTok, "bro pls don’t order those adult McDonald’s happy meals bro I’m begging."

Many people believed that the 2021 Pokémon card promotion was the lowest point in terms of customer intrusions for the underpaid employees of the biggest fast food company in the globe. But, according to the McDonald's staff and others commenting on Reddit and social media, this month's Happy Meals For Adults initiative is faring much worse. One anonymous employee said on Reddit under the heading New Adult Happy-meals are killing me, "We literally just came off the ‘buy one get one for a dollar and we were swamped with Big Mac meals. Now with this, we have to literally stockpile them to survive a rush. I hate it.” Furthermore, one employee informed Kotaku over Reddit DMs, "The most difficult aspect of this promo for the crew is the sheer volume of these meals that we are selling. Most stores I have seen have sold out of either special boxes, Big Mac buns, or toys. In some places, it’s more than one of these.”

Customers appear to have gone into a frenzy over the prospect of a cheap burger mixed with what will undoubtedly become a collector item since orders are pouring in quicker than restaurants can fill them. The problem seems to be that customers must purchase a Big Mac or a box of 10 chicken nuggets to buy one of the adult Happy Meals. Additionally, adults are free to make any purchases they like, unlike kids who have to nag an adult to buy them a traditional child’s Happy Meal box. Moreover, the fact that the boxes aren't designed for stacking adds to the staff's difficulty in managing the never-ending orders. Most importantly, many McDonald's employees are using Reddit to upload images of unusual orders that they are processing either through the app or in drive-throughs. Naturally, this then impacts everyone working the registers or attempting to keep up with the orders in the kitchens. In addition, others are uploading videos to TikTok that show an unusually high volume of Happy Meal orders waiting in line. Lastly, the fact that customers can now order meals from their homes via delivery apps added fuel to an already raging fire. That and the "chaos" brought on by the McDonald's app.
