According to Interesting Engineering, a maritime business has made history by installing the first automated, foldable, inflatable wing sail technology on a merchant ship. The container ship MN Pélican, which is owned by Compagnie Maritime Nantaise, is where the 100 sqm wing prototype was installed, according to Michelin, a French maker of industrial equipment. Teams from Michelin, French industrial equipment supplier Start2Prod IMECA, Compagnie Maritime Nantaise - MN, Michelin Aria, and Michelin Recherches et Technologies (MRT Switzerland) made it possible to install the WISAMO (Wind and Sail Mobility) wing sail on a commercial vessel, the company stated on Linkedin on Thursday. Merchant ship now has the first automated inflatable wing sail technology installed The business continued, "This new step offers a terrific intercultural experience and moments of sharing unique competencies to contribute to an important cause toward maritime transport decarbonization." The WISAMO (Wing Sail and Mobility) project is currently deploying the 1999-built commercial ship in Spain's El Astillero Port. The prototype, according to the business, may be mounted on both professional and recreational ships. The approach relies on wind energy, which is thought to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20% per ship. The wing sail system can either be included as original equipment in the construction of a ship or it can be retrofitted into a ship that is already in use. It is perfect for ro-ro boats, tankers, bulk carriers, and LNG carriers. In order to test the "pioneering solution" on a ship, Michelin and the Compagnie Maritime Nantaise-MN, a division of SOGESTRAN Group, came to a collaboration agreement in June 2022. This agreement serves as the basis for this installation project. Brittany Ferries has been leasing the RORO-containership MN Pélican at Compagnie Maritime Nantaise since 2016. It travels twice weekly between Poole, England, and Bilbao, Spain. In accordance with the industrial development stage of the new technology, Michellin will be able to test the WISAMO wing in genuine commercial marine navigation circumstances thanks to the installation.
