Meta is being sued over a reported tax-sharing scam

A complaint has been filed against Meta for allegedly violating users' right to privacy by gathering information from users of well-known third-party tax software. The filing relates to previous allegations that online tax software tools including H&R Block, TaxAct, and TaxSlayer sent information such names, email addresses, income information, student loan data, and return amounts back to Meta by using the company's "Meta Pixel," a piece of javascript code. The internet giant would have used this to create personalized, targeted adverts based on the information on websites like Facebook and Instagram. (Image: stock image and Meta logo)[/caption] The plaintiff's filing acknowledged that Meta required companies to have a "lawful right to collect, use, and share" users' data, but it went on to claim that this was not upheld, instead relying "on a broken honor system that has resulted in repeated, documented violations of Meta's own contractual promises and state and federal law." Despite the alleged wrongdoing by the internet giant, present users of the aforementioned tax software shouldn't be concerned in the slightest. All of the aforementioned tax sites, according to The Markup, have either completely deleted Pixel or adjusted its settings such that it no longer collects any more financial information from consumers. It's significant to note that Meta is solely responsible for any claimed violation because the tax services themselves were not named as defendants in the petition.
