An official release date has finally been set for the much-awaited MSI Claw, the newest player in the growing PC handheld gaming market. The Claw, which was unveiled earlier this year, has attracted a lot of attention thanks to its amazing specs. On March 8, 2024, Newegg claims that the Claw will go on sale in the United States in three distinct versions. The two other models, which retail for $699 and $799, will go on sale a week later on March 15th, while the base model, which costs $749, will be available on launch day. Every model has an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H or Core Ultra 5 135H processor with 512GB or 1TB of storage. The Claw is the first portable PC handheld to feature the powerful Intel Core Ultra series. While the Core Ultra 5 has 14 CPU cores and 7 Xe-Core graphics, the Core Ultra 7 has an astounding 16 CPU cores and 8 Xe-Core graphics. With these specifications, mobile gaming is promised to have powerful performance. Initial sales may be hampered by the late reveal and almost instantaneous launch, which leaves little opportunity for pre-order marketing. Furthermore, the Claw's $699 starting price puts it at a higher price point than other models, casting doubt on its value proposition. In addition, the Claw's design is similar to that of other handheld devices, such as the Lenovo Legion Go and Steam Deck, which may mean that it lacks the "wow factor" necessary to differentiate itself in a crowded market. This, together with its higher price tag, may deter prospective customers from looking for a more distinctive and affordable choice. The Claw is nevertheless a technically remarkable introduction to the PC portable market despite these reservations. Its ambitious hardware could result in very good gaming experiences. It will take time to see if the Claw can carve out a unique place in this rapidly expanding market, despite facing formidable competition from established players and possible marketing gaffes.
