It appears that Samsung is getting ready to introduce a fresh take on the SmartThings Hub. The SmartThings Station will have a number of capabilities but will not support Matter integration.
A possible replacement for the SmartThings Hub, Samsung has validated what looks to be a new smart home hub with the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC). To give some context, Samsung debuted the SmartThings Hub in 2018 but has since changed the direction of the service to make it less dependent on a separate hub. The SmartThings app now acts as a SmartThings hub on Galaxy smartphones and tablets.
The "SmartThings Station," a prototype of which we have embedded below, has been identified by the FCC as the "EP-P9500." Surprisingly, despite having connectivity options for Bluetooth Low Energy, WiFi 5, and Zigbee, the SmartThings Station does not support the Matter standard. The SmartThings Station appears to be a flat, black slab with rounded corners in the image below, just like a contemporary tablet.

Due to Samsung's decision to make the SmartThings Station Qi-compatible, it may also function as a wireless charger. Sadly, it's yet unclear how Samsung will integrate all of these capabilities and when the SmartThings Station will be accessible. The SmartThings Station's FCC documentation was released around the same time as that for the Galaxy S23 series, so at this point we wouldn't rule out a release in early 2023 with devices like the
Galaxy S23 Ultra.
