While the Pixel 7 series keeps the under-display fingerprint sensor, the Pixel Tablet and future Pixel foldable will use traditional side-mounted sensors. The display resolutions for both devices are revealed by the new code.
Many long-time Pixel fans were dissatisfied with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro because Google relocated the fingerprint sensor from the back of the phone to the front, beneath the display. While some companies, such as Samsung, have had moderate success with under-display fingerprint readers, the Pixel 6 was noticeably slower than the Pixel 5.
Google has since improved the experience with the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, significantly speeding up the reading process and even adding full face unlock support. Despite these advancements, it appears that Google's next Pixel devices — the 2023 Pixel Tablet and the long-awaited Pixel "Notepad" foldable — will use traditional fingerprint scanners.
Google is testing two specific devices with this type of sensor, according to Android code designed explicitly to test the UI of side-mounted fingerprint readers.
The first is "Y-aligned," which means the fingerprint sensor is on the left or right side, and it comes in two different configurations: "folded" and "unfolded."
This implies that the foldable Pixel Notepad's fingerprint sensor will be placed similarly to the Galaxy Z Fold series.
Notably, the "unfolded" (larger, inner screen) specifications show a display resolution of 1840 x 2208. Meanwhile, the resolution of the "folded" version (presumably the smaller, outer screen) is 1080 x 2100.
The main reason Google switched from an under-display sensor to a traditional one on the foldable Pixel is presumably to ensure that unlocking the phone is consistent, whether it's folded or unfolded, by using the same sensor for both.
Next, consider a "X-aligned" device, in which the fingerprint sensor is located along the top or bottom edge. We believe this code is for the upcoming Pixel Tablet, which will presumably have its sensor on the upper power/lock button, similar to the Pixel Slate. The Pixel Tablet, or at least one model of it, will have a 2560 x 1600 resolution display, according to the code.

Based on that resolution and display size, the Pixel Notepad could be quite similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 in size and shape. It's also possible, though unconfirmed, that the foldable will match the 120Hz refresh rate of the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
