An unmanned SpaceX Dragon vehicle will launch to the International Space Station today, Saturday, November 26. The International Space Station Roll Out Solar Arrays, also known as iROSAs, along with a variety of science experiments and technological demonstrations will be packed inside the Dragon, which will be launched by a Falcon 9 rocket. An experiment to raise a crop of dwarf tomatoes will also be delivered. Research has been done on growing food aboard the space station since it will be important to cultivate food for longer crewed space trips, such those aimed at visiting Mars, so that humans can consume fresh foods. Growing and consuming your own food has a positive psychological impact, which is helpful for astronauts. Although there have been trials into producing chiles, radishes, and more, most of the crops grown on the ISS to date have been leafy greens. The next project, called VEG-05, will test out growing tomatoes and look into how light and fertilizer affect their growth. Space Station Another experiment being conducted will examine the Bacillus subtilis bacteria, which is prevalent in the human gut and is important for protecting against foodborne illnesses and gut health. In order to learn more about space microbiology and to help keep astronauts healthy, the experiment will examine how this bacterium's DNA is impacted by spaceflight.
