Tesla recently launched a home charging station that works with all other models of electric vehicles. Additionally, due to its design, which is not exclusive to Tesla automobiles, other electric vehicles can also use the Wall Connector charging station.
According to Electrek, Tesla uses a unique proprietary connector for cars made for the North American market, unlike other manufacturers of electric vehicles. As a result, the business can continue to limit the use of its charging network and products, like its home charger, to
Tesla EVs.
However, Tesla intended the Wall Connector to become the new standard, but efforts to do so earlier in the year were unsuccessful. As a result, Tesla has been taking the initiative to open up its charging infrastructure and product lines to other types of
electric vehicles.
The addition of CSS Connectors to Supercharger Stations
Tesla also made it clear that North American Supercharger stations will get CCS connectors. Additionally, the moves came after they added the CSS connectors to the European Supercharger stations.
Furthermore, Tesla briefly introduced a new home charging station version in 2021 that featured something novel. The new Wall Connectors introduced used a J1772 connector in place of the standard one. In addition, the company released a new Wall Connector for EVs from manufacturers other than Tesla in mind. The production of these home chargers, however, did not allow them to be readily available for a long time. Hence, they were only available for a short time.
Moreover, Tesla announced the J1772 Wall Connector, the updated model of its home charging station on its official website. According to its listing, the charging station will set purchasers back $550 for the non-Tesla electric car charging version.
What now
According to the company's description, the carmaker might be aiming to dominate the commercial charging market. For instance, in a section, the website directed developers, managers, and owners of real estate to visit another section if they wanted to make bulk purchases.
Also, Tesla advised customers who wanted to purchase more than 12 J1772 Wall Connectors to go to the website's designated Commercial Charging section. According to Electrek's report, the new home charging station's price can be viewed as competitive due to the inclusion of connectivity and power-sharing functions.
On another note, Tesla users may still use the station, of course, but they will now need an adaptor to make their car work with the new home stations. In addition, Tesla's original Wall Connector, which costs $400 and comes with its original proprietary connector, is still available to owners who don't need to charge electric vehicles outside of Tesla vehicles.
