On April 29, Tesla released a document stating it is recalling 48,000 Model 3 Performance cars in the US. The reason is that in “Track Mode,” some of these vehicles are not displaying speedometers. Moreover, over the last year, Tesla has issued many vehicles recalls. Some recalls were even under the pressure of NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Fortunately, most of them were due to minor issues resolved by simple over-the-air software updates. For instance, Tesla recalled over 800,000 vehicles due to seat belt issues. The problem concerned a reminder alert to buckle the seat belt that sometimes wouldn’t appear under specific conditions. Furthermore, the recent recall involves Model 3 cars from 2018 to 2022. Additionally, the company will fix the speedometer display issue with an over-the-air software update. Tesla revealed that a firmware update back in December accidentally removed the speed unit from the user interface. In addition, the company released the Track Mode software back in 2018. It fine-tuned the dynamic controls for better track performance. In 2020, the company launched a new version of the software - Track Mode V2. It included more customization features and even maps of some racetracks with a whole video game-like experience inside the car. Pretty cool, right! The recent recall notice

Due to the lack of a speedometer display, the NHTSA said Model 3 Performance vehicles do not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Thus, if drivers do not know how fast they are traveling, it could increase the risk of a crash. Therefore, Tesla is issuing a new over-the-air recall for 48,184 Model 3 Performance affected vehicles. Here is what the recall notices state -

“Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Model 3 Performance vehicles. The unit of speed (mph or km/h) may fail to display on the speedometer while in Track Mode. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, “Control and Displays.”

Lastly, the company will send a recall notice to all owners by June 6.
