Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton stated on Thursday, October 20, that he will be bringing a fresh case against Google. The lawsuit claims that by failing to obtain sufficient user consent to collect and exploit voice and face data from millions of Texas consumers, the company broke the state's biometric data statute. According to the lawsuit via CNET's article, the alleged violation of a Texas legislation that carries penalties of up to $25,000 for each offense may have had a negative impact on millions of users. The numbers are mounting quickly, which is not good for Google. The penalty might possibly reach billions of dollars. The case highlights the importance that different states play in protecting the data of internet users because there is no overarching federal privacy policy. For instance, a class action case against Facebook brought under the Biometric Information Privacy Act of Illinois was settled last year for $650 million. This case relates to the same law, known as the Capture or Use of Biometric Identifier Act, that Paxton brought against Facebook's parent corporation, Meta, earlier this year. Paxton claimed that the companies had illegally gathered customer biometric data without their informed consent in each of the ongoing charges he has filed against the companies.
