The same thing occurred to actress Valerie Bertinelli, who before apologizing changed back to her old Twitter identity. The blue verification checkmark was offered without charge to some users who were verified by Twitter staff as being who they claimed to be prior to the change, according to Bertinelli. A significant part of the honorees are journalists. According to Bertinelli, having the blue verification checkmark signifies that the account's identity has been validated, making it more difficult for scammers to use the account's identity as a ruse.
