Why America's Best Grocery Chain is closing convenient?

America's #1 grocery chain may soon have some unhappy customers due to its decision to discontinue a service that many shoppers used, particularly during the pandemic. Wegmans has more than 100 locations on the East Coast. It is well-known for its exceptional customer service and large selections. The chain informed customers via email that it would soon discontinue its mobile scan-and-go in-store scanning app. This innovative way to check out helped shoppers skip lines and reduce time at the store. The Wegmans SCAN app was first launched in 2020. It allowed customers to scan barcodes from their smartphones while shopping. This enabled them to seamlessly check out at the end of their visit. The app was very popular and many Wegmans customers expressed their dismay at the announcement that it would be ending on Sunday, September 18. What's the answer? Wegmans sent an email stating that the grocery chain has suffered too many losses in connection with the SCAN app. "We quickly developed our SCAN app in response to the pandemic. It allows for in-store shopping without having to contact anyone. SCAN users love the app for its convenience. It is a great app and we have made many changes to it. "Unfortunately, the losses that we are experiencing as a result of this program prevents us from continuing making it available in its current condition," CEO Colleen Wegeman wrote in an email. This explanation is more than a little vague. However, Wegmans declined to give further details. Wegmans spokesperson said that the company had decided to disable the app until it can be improved to meet the needs of customers and businesses. Wegmans doesn't think mobile apps are dead. They continue to offer innovative ways to shop. SCAN app users were originally informed via email that Wegmans "will continue to offer new digital solutions to simplify your shopping experience in the future." Users of the SCAN app will not leave empty-handed Sunday; they'll each get a $20 coupon to their Shoppers Club accounts. While scan-and-go technology can be convenient for shoppers, it can cause problems for retailers. Apps such as the one that Wegmans discontinued have been associated with increased theft rates and inventory loss at other stores and chains that use such technology. According to an ex-executive, Walmart had to suspend its scan-and go program in 2018 due to theft concerns. The company has since reintroduced mobile scanning-and-go to Walmart+ customers.
