You can now play games in your Tesla Model S and X thanks to a holiday update

Tesla has been touting the gaming capabilities of its most recent vehicles for some time, promising that the Model S and Model X vehicles could function as their own gaming console. While not much has happened so far, Tesla has finally reached a major milestone that significantly improves the cars' gaming credentials: Steam support. It will be the new computer that will power Tesla's video game ambitions, which the automaker believes will become increasingly important inside vehicles as self-driving technology becomes available. Steam support has been promised for some time, but it was never clear when it would arrive. The app is still in beta, but it comes with the Tesla holiday update, along with other useful features. This means that drivers of a 2022 model year (or newer) Model S or Model X will be able to access the Steam store to purchase and install "thousands" of Steam games, as well as synchronize save files with the cloud, allowing them to continue their progress regardless of device. Tesla[/caption] The Model S and Model X, on the other hand, are the two most expensive vehicles in Tesla's lineup, and the only ones that include the necessary gaming computer. It also requires 16GB of DDR RAM and an active Premium Connectivity subscription, which costs $10 per month or $100 per year. You'll also need a car controller, and while any Bluetooth controller should work, Tesla claims the PS5's DualSense is the best. It's also worth noting that the Tesla Steam appears to be running a Linux version rather than Windows. So you don't have access to the entire Steam library; only games that have been verified for Linux-based Steam Deck are available.

When you think about it, that's still a lot. Certainly in comparison to Tesla's previous offerings, which included Cuphead, The Witcher 3, and more casual arcade games. Tesla's Holiday update isn't all about Steam, and there are some extra features for those who don't have a brand new Model S or Model X. New apps include Apple Music, Zoom, Mahjong, and the ability to schedule a multi-car light show. More useful changes include the ability to view a vehicle's interior while in Dog or Sentry mode, Track Mode for improved closed track performance and control, and a slew of others.
