Google to present clone of ChatGPT on Feb 8?

Panic reigns! Google will host an event that can only be referred to as an "emergency" the following week. The event will focus on "using the power of AI to reimagine how people search for, explore, and interact with information, making it more natural and intuitive than ever before to find what you need," as stated in an invitation sent to The Verge In other words, Google will turn on its photocopier and affix OpenAI's ChatGPT to the plate. On February 8, the 40-minute event will, of course, be streamed live on YouTube. Yesterday, Alphabet, Google's parent company, held its earnings call, during which Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google/Alphabet, stated that "very soon people will be able to interact directly with our newest, most powerful language models as a companion to Search in experimental and innovative ways."  In response to ChatGPT's meteoric rise earlier this year, the company issued a "code red" and even brought co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin out of retirement to assist. Google has a lot of AI technology, but most of it is hidden from the general public. It has an AI that generates images called "Imagen" and a chatbot language model called "LaMDA" (Language Model for Dialogue Applications).  [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Google's invite. Google's invite.[/caption] Google, on the other hand, keeps everything internal and only ever talks about these projects in blog posts and research papers, whereas OpenAI transforms similar technologies into public products like DALL-E and ChatGPT that captivate the entire world and garner the company a great deal of attention. A CNBC report says that "Apprentice Bard," a chatbot that uses LaMDA technology and enables people to "ask questions and receive detailed answers similar to ChatGPT," is one result of Google's productization efforts. "an alternate search page that could use a question-and-answer format," "prompts for potential questions placed directly under the main search bar" on the Google homepage, and a results page that displays "a gray bubble directly under the search bar, offering more human-like responses than typical search results" were just a few of the many options that the report described. It's not even obvious that Google has a problem with ChatGPT. The Google Graveyard is littered with projects attempting to "clone a competitor," as Google has a track record of overreacting to other popular online events.  Google+ was developed at a time when it viewed Facebook as an existential threat. Google no longer maintains a social media presence and that project was ultimately terminated, but the company appears to be doing well. Before that, "Google's biggest search rival" was Amazon.  Google Shopping Express, a competitor to Amazon Prime, was eventually born out of these worries. This project also failed, and Amazon has not yet replaced Google search in some way. Because it provides direct responses to questions, ChatGPT is touted as a search competitor.  While that is a function of Google Search, the company already offers a direct answer interface: Assistant from Google. Assistant, like ChatGPT, was initially promoted as a chatbot. Google has reportedly been cutting resources from the division, despite the fact that the Assistant works fine for straightforward queries. However, the feature has not been able to be monetized.  Other than kicking the can down the road for a few years, there is no indication of how a competitor to ChatGPT would address the fundamental issue of monetization. When you have a list of ten blue links to sort through, you can make money, but it's harder to do so when you help people find an answer right away.  Google's bottom line may suffer if it encourages a greater number of users to use that interface. In addition to Google, Amazon has also been unable to come up with a solution to Alexa's monetization.
