Massive Data Breach Targeting Tire Company Leads to Exposure of Millions of Customer Records

(Image credit- Hack Read) A cybersecurity expert recently found a significant data breach that was directed at SimpleTire, a well-known business that offers automobile tires and related services, according to the reports. Jeremiah Fowler, a cybersecurity researcher, claimed that SimpleTire had been keeping a database online that was unprotected, exposing private customer data to anyone who knew where to look.

What Data Have Been Compromised?

Over 2.8 million client records were present in the access database, which was believed to be 1 TB in size. Numerous pieces of personal information were included in these documents, including full names, contact information (phone numbers, addresses, and partial credit card numbers), and expiration dates. The fact that the database included the final four characters of users' credit card numbers is particularly concerning. The first six digits of credit card numbers, or the "Issuer Identification Numbers" (IIN), are available to the general public, however revealing the last four digits can greatly raise the risk of fraud. Fowler cautions that with the appropriate tools, threat actors might theoretically guess the remaining six numbers and obtain the whole credit card information in a matter of seconds.

Considering the Breach's Threats

When consumer data like names, home locations, and expiration dates are combined, it creates a worrying situation where crooks may quickly compile detailed profiles of their victims. The effects of this data exposure are wide-ranging and pose a serious threat to those who are impacted. With stolen data, cybercriminals can commit a wide range of online crimes, from identity theft to wire fraud.

Guidelines for Potential Victims

Fowler instantly notified SimpleTire via several email addresses, according to the reports, but the company's reaction was unsatisfactorily slow. SimpleTire acknowledged the intrusion and secured the information, but it took them more than three weeks to do so. According to SimpleTire, it has more than 10,000 installers and more than 3,000 independent supply locations, supporting thousands of small businesses and employing hundreds of people. Millions of consumers' privacy is at stake, and the company's reputation and dependability are also at risk due to this incident. This event serves as yet another reminder of the vital need of protecting client information in an era where data breaches have become alarmingly regular. According to the data we have, 41.6 million accounts have already been compromised in the first quarter of 2023 alone. Companies that experience a data breach are required by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to immediately notify those whose personal information has been compromised. This will allow the parties that are affected to take action to lessen the possibility of information misuse. Affected SimpleTire customers are urged to keep a close eye on their financial accounts, report any unusual activity to their individual financial institutions, and think about freezing their credit to prevent unauthorized access as the investigation into this data breach progresses.
