Microsoft Is Pushing It's Edge Browser To Make It Popular

One important traffic indicator suggests that Microsoft's efforts to entice people to its proprietary Edge browsers are succeeding. Since Edge's debut in January 2020, Microsoft has been actively promoting it, as seen by data that SimilarWeb provided to TechRadar Pro: visits to the browser's download page climbed that month by more than six and a quarter million compared to December 2019, from 228,644 to 6,524,646. Another spike occurred in May 2022, with visits increasing by almost a million over the previous month. This increase may have been caused by Microsoft's announcement in April 2022 that Edge would support VPN use. Anyone who uses Windows computers or Microsoft's software will be familiar with the frequent requests to adopt Edge, which are accompanied by links to download pages and guarantees of quicker performance with first-party services like Outlook's email provider. Although SimilarWeb was unable to give download metrics for these browsers due to their own privacy policies, it is commonly known that these competitors significantly dominate the browser market. However, Mozilla's Firefox, once among the most widely used browsers in the world, is losing ground to Microsoft's Edge. With an average of a million more download page visitors than Firefox between May and September 2022, Edge continuously outpaced its opponent. Between October 2019 and September 2022, its global average monthly confirmed downloads was just under 60,000. Opera (2,312,387), whose popularity has soared in recent years, presumably as a result of its free integrated VPN, a browsing feature that continues to gain appeal with regular users, defeated it most comprehensively on this front. With a monthly average of 1,046,939 verified downloads, the anonymous browser Tor outperformed Firefox. In fact, Brave was the only browser in the data to do worse than Firefox; it averaged just over 30,000 confirmed downloads throughout the course of the study. The relative popularity of Tor reflects the growing concern about internet privacy as consumers become more aware and even dubious of Big Tech's frequently relentless collection of personal information. In fact, over 80% of customers are prepared to switch browsers if it means enhancing their privacy protections, according to a recent survey performed by Opera and ad blocker company Eyeo.
