The launch of Netflix's new, inexpensive, ad-supported tier in November is another indication of how the once-disruptive startup streaming service has gradually evolved into a cable package under a different name. On November 3rd, 2022, Netflix's new Basic with Ads tier will go on sale in the US, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, and the UK for $6.99. This was just revealed by Netflix. Basic with Ads would grant customers access to a sizable portion of Netflix's content in exchange for making them view, on average, four to five minutes of advertisements every hour. But not all of the platform's offerings. Basic with Ads members won't be able to access a few movies and TV episodes because of licensing limitations, while Netflix claims to be working on a solution. The length of each Netflix ad will range from 15 to 30 seconds, and it will appear both before and during shows. Video quality is limited to 720p/HD and Basic with Ads customers are not permitted to download material to their devices. According to Netflix, "hundreds of advertisers globally" have already bought the majority of its initial inventory. Although Netflix has been ad-free for years, the idea of paying for a version of the service that includes ads may need some convincing before it becomes popular.
