Signal will no longer support SMS text on Android devices for security

Signal will soon stop supporting SMS messages.
  • While the change is coming soon, Signal says it is being made to ensure that its users' messages are always private and secure when sent to others.
  • Signal users should start receiving notifications about how it no longer supports SMS and how to export old SMS messages if they so desire.
  • Signal has announced that it will no longer support SMS messages on Android.
Signal's official post states that the messaging platform will begin to phase out SMS support on its platform. Signal sees this as a way to provide a more "streamlined experience" for Android users in the future. The company does clarify, however, that the removal of SMS support will only affect those who use Signal as their default SMS messaging app. When the app no longer supports SMS, those who have not found a new app that does will be forced to do so. However, Signal explains that if you want to keep those messages, you can export them into another app that supports it. The signal is a popular Android messaging app that is known for its privacy and security. This app provides end-to-end encryption for all messages sent while remaining free on the Google Play Store. If you want, the Signal app will walk you through the process of moving those old messages. Signal's second reason for discontinuing SMS support is to protect its users from unexpectedly high messaging fees. Signal claims that users who text through its app without realizing they were sending SMS messages were charged striking fees. Finally, by dropping SMS support  Signal can emphasize its theme of private and secure texts. Signal's user interface has the duality of attempting to show both SMS messages and secure texts. By discontinuing SMS support, Signal users will avoid any confusion about what constitutes a secure message and what constitutes an SMS text.
