The SAE Level 3 accreditation for an autonomous driving system in the US has been awarded to the Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT system. The technology, which is presently only approved in Nevada, will be available in 2024 in the S-Class and EQS Sedan models. The system has the ability to alter the vehicle's speed, steer, respond to traffic signals, and identify dangers. Mercedes-Benz has surpassed Tesla to become the first company in the world to obtain SAE Level 3 certification for autonomous driving in the US. The first regularly produced cars authorized to drive autonomously on US public freeways will be the 2024 S-Class and EQS Sedan models, and DRIVE PILOT will be an option for both of these models. Nevada is the only US state that has so far approved the technology; the business says it plans to expand to California later this year and has already submitted the required paperwork to the appropriate authorities. The car's speed and distance from other vehicles can be controlled by the system up to 40 mph (64 kph) based on the road conditions that are detected. The system is also capable of reading traffic signs, detecting events, and, when necessary, braking or lane maneuvering. On the rim of the steering wheel are buttons that you can use to operate DRIVE PILOT. One restriction is that the device only functions on certain routes and needs a lot of traffic. Cars with DRIVE PILOT also feature extra sensors to make sure the autonomous technology is reliable and secure. These include microphones to pick up emergency cars, LiDAR, a rear-window camera, a wheel well road moisture sensor, and more. Customers should start receiving the first 2024 S-Class and EQS Sedan vehicles later in the year.
