A statement from the White House reads, "Too often, these tools are used to limit our opportunities and prevent our access to critical resources or services.”
"In America and around the world, systems supposed to help with patient care have proven unsafe, ineffective, or biased. Algorithms used in hiring and credit decisions have been found to reflect and reproduce existing unwanted inequities or embed new harmful bias and discrimination."
AI is used daily in all walks of our lives; there are plenty of benefits along with adversities making it imperative to set rules and regulations which have not been set to date.
In an attempt to protect the egalitarian principles and rights of civilians, the White House Office Of Science And Technology Policy has come up with five theories that can be used as a guide to design, maneuver, and establish automated systems. These are brought in to “set backstops against potential harms.”
The principles of the blueprint are:
- Human choice, reflection, and redemption
- Protection against algorithmic bias
- Privacy
- Observation and illustration
- Guarded and beneficial order
These rules apply to automated systems which "have the potential to meaningfully impact the American public's rights, opportunities, or access to critical resources or services."
However, critics believe that the bill will not be effective and there is no legality involved.
