The majority of gadgets must support USB-C charging by a strict deadline of December 28, 2024, in order to be sold in EU member states. Most significantly, in order for Apple to sell iPhones in the EU, it will have to completely abandon its Lightning standard. By 2026, laptops must support USB-C charging. This summer, the European Union (EU) said that most mobile electronics, including smartphones, will eventually need to have a USB-C port for charging. That date has ultimately been established by the EU. Beginning on December 28, 2024, the majority of mobile devices must support USB-C charging. The EU decision covers a range of electrical product categories, including cellphones. Devices must support USB-C charging in order for manufacturers to sell them in EU member states. Around 2026, laptops will have to support USB-C charging. The iPhone was the main factor in the news about the EU's campaign for an uniform charging method's popularity. Since its launch in 2008, Apple's flagship phone has depended on a proprietary connector for both data and charging. Before adopting the current Lightning connector with the release of the iPhone 5 in 2012, Apple's iPhones had a 30-pin connector. Even the most recent iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models still employ Apple's exclusive connector. Remember that there are numerous specifications for voltages, charging rates, and data transfer rates covered by the USB-C standards. Simply put, USB-C refers to the connector's form factor, or shape. The wiring's hardware can differ greatly. For instance, the term "USB-C" can refer to a Thunderbolt 4 cable with rates up to 80 Gbps, which is nearly 167 times faster than USB 2.0, or a USB 2.0 cable with a maximum transfer rate of 480 MB/s. The charging rates of USB-C chargers can also differ; the most recent cables have a maximum output of about 240 Watts.
