In an effort to shield Musk and Twitter from an FTC inquiry, House Republicans

Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the Judiciary Committee and the recently established Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, informed Kahn today that the research conducted by his committee demonstrates that "the FTC harassed Twitter in the wake of Mr. Musk's acquisition" and "abused it [sic] statutory and enforcement authority." Last month, Jordan and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) joined forces to ask the FTC for information regarding what they described as "inappropriate and burdensome demands coinciding with Elon Musk's acquisition of the company." Jordan issued today's subpoena in reaction to Khan's unsatisfactory response. Jordan wrote to Khan in a letter today, "Therefore, the Committee is issuing a subpoena to compel the production of documents necessary to inform our oversight." "We enforce the law without fear or favor," says Khan. An FTC representative responded by telling media organizations that the agency had "made many offers to inform Chairman Jordan's staff on our investigation into Twitter. Those are standing offers that were made before this wholly pointless subpoena. In a response dated March 27, Khan reportedly informed Jordan that FTC inquiries are private and that the organization "will continue to faithfully discharge our statutory obligations and enforce the law without fear or favor." In addition, she noted that monitoring compliance is crucial "when dealing with recidivists," a reference to Twitter's prior privacy violations. Jordan calls the FTC's response "pretextual." Jordan asserts that the FTC's probe has strayed from its stated goals. Jordan argued that "the FTC's requests to Twitter were not limited to the scope of the Order, making the FTC's justification pretextual at best." "On March 27, 2023, you sent a response letter seeking to justify the scope of the FTC's inquiry into Twitter by linking it to the terms of a narrower FTC Order related to Twitter's privacy practices," Jordan wrote. Jordan expressed disapproval of the FTC's request for "the identities of the journalists with whom it was engaging." That is a reference to a request the FTC made on December 13, 2022, in connection with Musk's disclosure of the alleged "Twitter Files." GOP is charged with promoting Musk's narrative.

During a hearing last month, Democratic Stacey Plaskett allegedly charged Republicans with using "cherry-picked, out-of-context emails and screenshots designed to promote [Musk's] chosen narrative." Plaskett represents the US Virgin Islands as a non-voting representative in the House. She allegedly stated, according to The Wall Street Journal, "Musk is helping you out politically, and you're going out of your way to promote and protect him."
