According to research firm Barclays, Apple supplier Cirrus Logic may have made a cryptic suggestion that the iPhone 15 Pro models may have haptic buttons in 2019. The Texas-based semiconductor manufacturer stated in a letter to shareholders this month that it is still "engaging with a strategic customer" and anticipates "bringing a new HPMS component to market in smartphones next year." High-performance mixed-signal chips from Cirrus Logic are referred to as HPMS, and they include haptic drivers for the Taptic Engine in iPhones. Cirrus Logic CEO John Forsyth shortened the window for this new component's release to the "back half of next year," which would coincide with the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro models in September, during an earnings call with analysts this month. iPhone 15 Pro The new component that Cirrus Logic mentioned will probably be included in additional Taptic Engines for the haptic buttons on iPhone 15 Pro models, according to a note to investors published by Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O'Malley last week: "The biggest change to our thinking here is to model $1 of new content in the IP15 Pro models. To be clear, the company hasn't said much here other than that the chip is mixed signal and not in the power domain. When looking at potential use cases, the largest change in new iPhone models next year is the removal of the buttons, which would require additional drivers for the haptics engine, making it the most likely use case for new content." iPhone 15 Pro Popular Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted solid-state volume and power buttons for the iPhone 15 Pro versions in October. According to Kuo, the gadgets will have two more Taptic Engines, which simulate hitting the buttons without really moving them, like the Force Touch trackpad on more recent MacBooks and the Home button on latest iPhone SE models. With no mechanical parts to wear out or break over time, haptic buttons on iPhones could offer even greater water resistance. However, mechanical buttons are still anticipated for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models.
