LG’s Airplay 2 Smart Monitor Lets You Stream Without Cables

LG recently released the Smart Monitor, which includes AirPlay 2 and doubles as a smart home hub, allowing you to stream from your Mac to the monitor without the use of cables. The LG Smart Monitor 32SQ780S is a 32-inch 60Hz 4K monitor with an adjustable ergonomic stand. It's a big boy, weighing nearly 25 pounds and measuring 16 inches thick. There are two USB-C ports on the back, but there isn't much else in terms of I/O. With one look at the LG Smart Monitor, you might mistake it for Apple's sunflower iMac from 20 years ago. The monitor protrudes from a thick cylindrical stand, and the panel's height and tilt can be adjusted. The monitor's smart home functionality is where it really shines. Along with AirPlay 2, it is powered by LG's webOS software. It includes pre-installed apps like Netflix and Hulu. AirPlay 2 is an update to Apple's original AirPlay streaming technology, which is a Bluetooth alternative. AirPlay 2 has more bandwidth than Bluetooth, allowing for faster streaming of media content such as audio and video, as well as the use of Apple's well-known Airdrop technology to quickly send large files around. LG Releases Smart Monitor With AIRPLAY2, Now Stream Without Cables Because of its proprietary nature, few businesses have adopted AirPlay 2. Bluetooth is simply less expensive and simpler to implement. Only Samsung has dabbled in Airplay, but LG has now fully jumped in with their new Smart Monitor. LG appears to want this monitor to double as a smart home hub. It includes a smart home dashboard from which you can manage devices throughout your home. When you think about it, adding smart home functionality to a computer monitor makes sense. You spend a lot of time on your computer during the day, so why not turn the monitor into a hub? There is no word on whether it will be able to control Apple's HomeKit-compatible devices. We expect it to, given its integration with AirPlay 2.
