According to a Reuters story, the largest manufacturer of chips in the US, NVIDIA, revealed on Monday that it is now supplying a brand-new, cutting-edge chip in China that complies with the export controls in place to stop China from gaining cutting-edge technology. After Reuters reported that Chinese computer retailers are already advertising devices using the new chip, the chip maker acknowledged the discovery to the news source. The A800 chip is the first documented effort by a US semiconductor company to create cutting-edge processors for China that comply with new US trade restrictions. In an effort to undermine China's semiconductor industry, US restrictions were put in place at the beginning of October that effectively forbade Chinese chipmakers from exporting cutting-edge microchips and the equipment required to create them. The US stated worries that the chips might be utilized militarily. As a result, they forbade IT firms like NVIDIA from exporting their goods. Late in August, NVIDIA and Advanced Micro Devices both declared that the US Commerce Department had put their cutting-edge semiconductors—particularly NVIDIA's data center processor A100—on the export control list.
