Twitter's user verification process is constantly evolving. Elon Musk confirmed the update in a tweet on Sunday.
This weekend, Musk was active on Twitter, with various reports closely following his team's current activities on the social media platform. During Musk's weekend Twitter session, spaceflight photographer John Kraus brought up the verification process and its problems.

Kraus is a well-known spaceflight photographer whose work has appeared in a variety of publications. Despite this, and the fact that he has more than 137,000 Twitter followers, the social media company has previously rejected his verification attempts. This is particularly intriguing given that some spam accounts on the platform have verified badges.
Musk reacted to the spaceflight photographer's post, stating that "the entire verification process is currently being revamped." The Tesla CEO's remarks are encouraging for Twitter and its users, especially given the difficulty in obtaining an authenticated badge from the social media company.
Teslarati has experienced this. The publication currently has 700,000 Twitter followers, and its staff includes a verified user named Johnna Crider. Despite this, the company's repeated attempts to obtain user verification from Twitter have been futile. Twitter has never provided any explanations for the (apparently automatic) rejections.
Elon Musk's changes to Twitter's user verification process are expected to be implemented soon. Twitter's current verification system is murky at best and appears biassed at worst, and the social media company never really explains why verification requests are rejected. Fortunately, Musk has already started making changes at Twitter, so there appears to be a good opportunity that a revamped verification system will be implemented.
