Use This Netflix Tip to Watch Something New During the Holidays

Are you ready to relax on the couch after the holidays? A Netflix marathon is an excellent place to begin. If you're sick of watching the same list of Netflix TV shows and movies, scrolling isn't the best way to discover something new to watch. It's also a poor way to discover other niche genres that you might be interested in. However, there is a secret trick for searching Netflix's library by genre and finding exactly what you're looking for: Netflix codes. Rather than accepting the algorithm's recommendations, know how to use Netflix codes to figure out your own next binge-watch.

Netflix codes

Netflix codes are focused solely on a number system that relates to a range of genres or subgenres and is used by the algorithm to categorize and serve recommendations. So instead of scrolling through Horror, for more specific results, search Small Town Scares (81496215). [caption id="attachment_64551" align="alignright" width="1200"]Netflix Image credit: Canva[/caption] Netflix currently has approximately 36,000 codes. It should be noted that codes may only be used on Netflix's website, not in its apps.

Where can I find Netflix's menu?

For a complete list, visit Netflix-codes.com. There are nearly 20 categories, including anime, foreign films, and classic films. These categories are further subdivided into subgenres. For example, code 8711 for horror movies contains 12 more codes such as deep-sea horror movies, zombie horror movies, teen screams, and more.

How do I make use of Netflix codes?

The simplest method is to install the Better Browse for Netflix Chrome extension. Here's how it's done: [caption id="attachment_78051" align="alignright" width="1200"]netflix-codes Image: netflix[/caption]
  1. Navigate to the Chrome Web Store and type "Better Browse for Netflix" into the search bar.
  2. Click the Add to Chrome button.
  3. Select the Add Extension option.
  4. Open a new tab and sign in to your Netflix account.
You should see a new option — Browse All — next to My List at the top of the Netflix home screen. Select that to search manually or navigate through the available subgenres. [caption id="attachment_78046" align="alignright" width="1200"]Netflix Image: Canva[/caption]

Another option is to use the Netflix codes website. Here's how it's done:

  1. Go to Netflix-codes.com on your computer or mobile browser.
  2. Determine the genre or subgenre you would like to explore.
  3. Click the code located next to the desired genre or subgenre.
  4. If you're using a device with the Netflix app installed, the app should open and direct you to the genre or subgenre you selected. If you don't have the app, it will open Netflix in your browser and allow you to view the specific movies and shows that are available.
  5. Select the title to watch.

You can also manually enter the Netflix codes into your browser. Here's how it's done:

  1. Go to Netflix-codes.com on your computer or internet browser.
  2. Determine the genre or subgenre you like to explore.
  3. In a new tab, enter http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/INSERTNUMBER>, but replace INSERT NUMBER with the code for the specific genre or subgenre.
  4. You'll be directed to Netflix to browse the titles in that section.
You can then either make a mental note of the movie you want to watch and return to the app on your preferred device, or you can log in to watch it in your browser.
