YouTube Is Rolling Out Various Features After Turning 17

YouTube recently celebrated its 17th birthday. To commemorate the website's ability to view R-rated movies, YouTube is introducing a slew of new features and changes to all users in the coming weeks. Here's what you can expect when the new YouTube arrives on your device. One of the first changes you may notice is an ambient mode. This new feature adds a splash of color to the watch page of a YouTube video based on the colors of whatever you're watching, inspired by the way light from a screencast out in a dark room. It's a subtle but effective effect that revitalizes our nearly two-decade-long YouTube binge. You must be viewing YouTube in dark mode for Ambient mode to activate. On mobile, you can access the option by tapping your profile icon and going to Settings > General > Appearance. Click your profile icon on the desktop, then select Appearance. If you don't like ambient mode, you can disable it without completely turning off dark mode. Navigate to Settings > Ambient mode and deactivate the toggle next to Ambient mode. Speaking of dark mode, YouTube has darkened it even more. Ambient mode is also applied to playlists, so you'll see dynamic previews for videos within the list. YouTube Another change you'll probably notice right away is the YouTube player. Many of the elements with which you frequently interact have been revamped by the company: Video links in descriptions are now buttons; buttons such as "like," "share," and "download" have a more minimalist look; and the subscribe button is no longer red, but rather high contrast, to encourage viewers to subscribe. On iOS and Android, you can now pinch to zoom in on videos. When you lift your fingers from the screen, the video remains in the position you left it in. There is also "precise seeking": Drag or swipe up on the screen to reveal thumbnails for different sections of the video, allowing you to skip ahead or back in time. According to YouTube, these features will be gradually rolled out to all users over the next few weeks. That means you might see them right away, or they might take a little while. If you just can't wait to try out new YouTube features, there's always youtube.com/new. Subscribers to YouTube Premium can use this site to enable experimental features that the company is currently testing. If you pay for YouTube, you should look into any upcoming features the company may have.
